Chapter 123 Meeting Chen Che
Chapter 123 Meeting Chen Che
There were no obstacles on the road, and their car sped smoothly along the streets. Huang Meng noticed that this road didn't seem to pass through the city. "Jiang Ying, are we taking a longer route?"
"Yes, the city has been surrounded by them. You'll see it when you pass by in a bit."
As soon as Jiang Ying finished speaking, the car turned a corner, and on the side of the road they saw what Jiang Ying meant by "surrounded."
One side of the road was fenced off with sheet metal that was more than two people tall, and behind it, there were intermittent sheets of sheet metal and barbed wire, which enclosed the main urban area on their right.
Through the barbed wire fence, tents of all sizes were pitched inside. It was clear that the tents, which should have been white, had now turned grayish-black. The conditions inside were not much better than outside. However, in front of some of the tents stood several lifeless people, staring blankly at them on the road, their eyes filled with nothing but despair.
Huang Meng sat on the inside, squeezing herself closer to the window, past Li Shuo, and almost lying on Zhao Meng's body.
At that moment, she desperately hoped to see some familiar faces through the barbed wire, but she was also afraid. After staring at it for a while, she sat back down.
Li Shuo was squeezed by her, and he was finally able to catch his breath after she sat down. Zhao Meng, on the other hand, had already turned red in the ears and didn't dare to look at Huang Meng. He awkwardly put his hand to his mouth, coughed twice, and tugged at his pants.
Xu Ao, sitting high up in the truck, had a clearer view. He could see the entire enclosed area, a small space crammed with tents, with almost no one moving around outside. Perhaps fearing infection with the plague, everyone was hiding inside the tents. Mercenaries guarded the perimeter of the wall at intervals. He searched carefully but couldn't find an entrance inside.
Xu Ao slumped halfway down on the truck, now he was really in trouble. There wasn't even an entrance, and there were so many mercenaries guarding it. How could he possibly get the medicine to Yuri and Nasha? Forget about getting the medicine, even seeing them was difficult.
Xu Ao looked up at the still azure, clean, and clear sky, but beneath its purity lay a cruel hell on earth.
Soon, the car slowly came to a stop. Xu Ao looked up and saw the embassy in front of him, just as it had been before he left.
Everyone got out of the car, and the truck drove into the yard. Someone came out to unload the goods. The mercenaries were quite disciplined; they didn't go into the yard but stayed outside, watching them unload the goods. The embassy gates were tightly closed before they drove away.
Only after standing in the courtyard did everyone breathe a sigh of relief. Li Shuo stretched in the courtyard and said, "Hmm, this is the embassy. It's not quite what I expected."
"Hey kid, what do you think an embassy should be like?" Old Chen said with a laugh when he heard his words.
"I thought it should be very luxurious and grand. This little building looks a bit, a bit, small and cramped."
"Hurry up and help, stop talking so much nonsense!" Huang Meng rolled her eyes at Li Shuo and said.
"Boss? You're back?" It was Xiao Zhang who spoke.
"Yes, he's back. Where's Chen Che?" Xu Ao asked quickly, concerned about Chen Che.
"It's with Lao Huang." Xiao Zhang looked at Xu Ao with tears welling up in his eyes.
Xu Ao patted her shoulder, picked up a box of medicine, and went to find Lao Huang. Jiang Ying watched his hurried back and sighed softly.
Once Zhao Meng entered the courtyard, he kept wandering around. He had mentioned to Xu Ao earlier that they had taken a small road from the outskirts to enter the main city, and he wanted to see where he could jump out from the courtyard.
"Stop looking. Even if you can find a way out, you saw on the way here that the place was so heavily fortified that not even a dog could get in." Jiang Ying said, looking Zhao Meng up and down. With his tall stature, he was far too conspicuous.
"Hmph, I understand what you mean. I was just looking around, I didn't mean anything by it," Zhao Meng said with a snort.
"You didn't want to do anything? If you didn't want to do anything, why did you come here?" Jiang Ying was indeed as clever as ever.
"Yes, that's true." Zhao Meng smiled slightly at her, said nothing more, and turned to leave.
He searched back and forth for Huang Meng's figure. "Stop looking, she went in with Xu Ao. He said he was going to see someone." Li Shuo said to Zhao Meng.
"Brother, it's all my fault." Chen Che sat on the bed, his face pale and his lips bloodless.
"What's it to blame you for? Focus on getting better first. I'll take care of everything else, so you don't need to worry." Xu Ao, wearing a mask, stood by the bed looking at Chen Che.
Huang Meng also wanted to go in, but was stopped by Lao Huang. She had seen Xu Ao carrying a medicine box and followed him in without thinking. Xu Ao knew she was behind him, so he went in himself and asked Lao Huang to come out and stop her.
"Old Huang, how is he?"
"Well, thankfully, it hasn't gotten any worse. After taking the medicine Xu Ao brought and resting for a few days, it should be almost healed," Old Huang said with a smile, looking at Huang Meng.
"Well, what about the others?" If one person is touching, it's impossible for the others to be completely unaffected.
"Yes, they are all in their own rooms. As soon as Chen Che found out, we carried out a thorough disinfection. Fortunately, we still had enough alcohol at that time, and they also took some medicine as a precaution. I told them to stay in their own rooms and not to come out unless necessary."
"That's good too. Less contact is the best way to prevent infection." Huang Meng's furrowed brows finally relaxed a bit. Luckily, Lao Huang was there, otherwise things would have fallen apart.
The two were talking at the door when Xu Ao came out. He saw that Huang Meng hadn't left yet, and he clearly paused in his forward steps, leaning back as he said to them, "You two, stay away from me. Old Huang, where's the disinfection area?"
Old Huang pointed to a storage room under the stairs that he had converted into a disinfection area. Xu Ao nodded, gave Huang Meng a deep look, and went over to disinfect himself.
When they came out again, Lao Huang went to check the medicines. Huang Meng was still standing at the door. "Why are you still standing here? Come on." Xu Ao frowned and pulled her into the yard.
"Xu Ao, we just saw that place is completely surrounded. What should we do?"
“Yes, I know. Don’t worry, Zhao Meng and I will see if we can contact Yuri in a bit.” As he was speaking, Zhao Meng walked over. “Where did you find Yuri before?” Xu Ao and Huang Meng exchanged a glance, then led him to the base of the wall. “Right here.” As soon as Huang Meng finished speaking, Zhao Meng took a few steps back, then took a running start and leaped onto the top of the wall in a few quick movements. Of course, just to be safe, he only clung to the edge of the wall, looking outside.
Huang Meng and Xu Ao below didn't dare to ask him loudly, so they waited quietly. After a while, Zhao Meng jumped down, dusted off his hands, and said to them, "It looks like there's no one outside now, but the weeds are very tall. The path you mentioned in the suburbs is completely invisible. Maybe it's covered by grass, maybe..."
“Perhaps they ruined it,” Xu Ao continued.
"Hmm, that's possible. If you're searching for someone and you've circled around to the main city, and it's the same group of mercenaries coming back, they'll understand that this side road is no longer safe."
"So now we're practically trapped inside the embassy," Huang Meng continued, picking up where Zhao Meng left off.
"Although we didn't see any mercenaries around the embassy, they escorted us all the way here. What's the difference between that and them watching us?"
The conversation ended there, seemingly at a dead end. All three looked worried. If they couldn't see them and deliver the medicine, what was the point of their visit?
The embassy is currently under quarantine. At dinner time, meals are delivered to each person's room door by kitchen staff to avoid everyone being in the same space at the same time and to reduce the possibility of airborne transmission.
Huang Meng stayed in her original room. As she entered, she caught a glimpse of the room where Yuri and Lin Hanshuang had once lived. After a brief look and a soft sigh, Huang Meng pushed open the door and went in. Xu Ao was beside her and watched her enter the room before going in himself.
He was anxious, but now that he was at the embassy, he couldn't just think about himself or a few individuals. In this respect, he envied Zhao Meng, who at least could do whatever he wanted.
