Chapter 27 Drag Me Down
Chapter 27 Drag Me Down
The Fool stared at the script in his hand, speechless for a long time. He hated the mastermind behind the scenes for his disregard for human life, and he also hated his own weakness. For the first time, he had a reason and impulse to pursue promotion, other than "going home".
But these are things to consider later. The problem is, what should we do now?
The fact that the mastermind was interfering behind the scenes showed that this ability to do so without leaving a trace was completely beyond his imagination. Klein was very worried that even if he left home now to report to the captain, he would be delayed by various things. Klein had no idea how to deal with it.
However, Evan had a plan for these things. Seeing that the fool remained silent, Evan feigned fear and said:
"This mastermind is too brazen. He actually targeted your followers. This matter must not be left unresolved."
The Fool, though seemingly indignant, was actually annoyed by Evan's provocation, but he didn't feel resentful, because it was obvious that Evan was provoking Klein.
In the eyes of others, the Fool is an ancient god who has awakened from antiquity, a great being. It takes great courage to play tricks on such a being, so Klein was quite moved by Evan's actions.
But the problem remains: he's a fraudulent deity. Aside from the gray mist being able to interfere with the mastermind's plans and having some effect, he's merely a 'diviner' who's not good at combat and has no real countermeasures. Therefore, he could only lay it all out for Evan:
"I have just awakened from an endless slumber and am not yet able to interfere much with the present world."
This was a self-examination for "The Fool," but for Klein, who had truly considered Evan a friend, it meant nothing.
Evan clearly sensed the vulnerability Klein was displaying towards him, an attitude only reserved for friends, which thrilled Evan.
Being Klein's teammate is always the most comfortable thing. He won't hold you back and can often provide you with the most reliable help.
So Evan said directly, "Actually, before I prayed to you, I thought of a solution that wasn't really a solution."
Upon hearing this, Klein's eyes lit up, and he immediately raised his hand to signal Evan to continue.
Evan didn't keep anyone in suspense and said, "The ring on my left hand is a very precious and extraordinary item, and it was carefully crafted by a 'craftsman'. It's difficult for ordinary people to see its true nature."
However, I recently discovered that someone is able to sense my ring, namely my classmate, your follower Klein's green-eyed colleague. I suspect he may possess some deep secrets in an extraordinary realm, related to higher powers.
Although the mastermind's true purpose remains uncertain, after several analyses of the scripts he wrote, I believe his target is in the North and East districts, and also involves the Church of the Night.
Because all the characters involved in his script, except for the members of the Secret Order who are the holders of that notebook and the members of the Aurora Society who are just tools to drive the plot, are followers of the Goddess of Night, including Klein before him.
Moreover, all the incidents occurred within the jurisdiction of the Church of the Night, which inevitably raises suspicions.
You can have Klein tally the number of extraordinary events that have occurred to the three major churches of Tingen during this period, and use this information to confront the green-eyed night watchman, so that he can endorse Klein's report on Old Neil's "status." The two of you can then report this matter to their captain together.
The price a mastermind has to pay for interfering with Beyonders of different sequences is certainly not unequal. Bringing down the secretive green-eyed Night Watcher would increase the cost of direct intervention for the mastermind.
Evan proposed a solution that didn't seem very reliable, a solution that didn't seem like a solution at all, but Evan knew in his heart that it was actually the best solution.
Leonard Mitchell, possessing an old man-like advantage, always considers himself the protagonist of the era. He appears unrestrained but is actually kind-hearted. After the Tingen incident, he is determined to avenge Klein and the others, making him a reliable ally.
The old man on his body is arguably the earliest angel to appear in Lord of Mysteries, and he comes from the most cunning "Thief" pathway. Most importantly, he is not inherently evil; he parasitizes Leonard mainly to avoid his opponents.
This old man may be seriously injured, but his status is such that even a 008 who has become a sealed object cannot shake him.
In the final battle of Lord of Mysteries, Ince Zangwill had the ability and time to kill the unconscious Leonard, but he didn't. Clearly, the old man inside him had stolen Ince Zangwill's ideas, and even 008 didn't realize it.
With such a powerful figure protecting him, reporting Old Neil wouldn't cause any problems at all.
Klein, however, was unaware of all this. He was still hesitant about whether to drag Leonard into the mess. He himself was a secretive person, so he didn't want to expose the secrets that others were trying to hide.
However, Old Neil and he were facing an imminent crisis, and he couldn't think of any other solutions. In the end, Klein decided to adopt Evan's idea.
So the Fool nodded slightly and said to Evan:
"I will relay your message to Klein."
Before Evan could react, Klein ended the conversation.
Klein, having left the gray fog, had no intention of sleeping. He put on his coat, picked up his cane, and headed straight for Leonard's house that very night, even finding a horse-drawn carriage to pick up passengers at night.
Although Klein had never been to Leonard's house, he knew where it was. This was something every night watchman needed to know, because extraordinary events could happen at any time, and reinforcements could be called in at any moment. It would be terrible if they couldn't call for backup because they didn't know their colleagues' addresses at critical moments.
Leonard's house was a bit far from Klein's house, and it took the carriage an hour to get there. Klein didn't pay the carriage to leave, but instead paid a deposit and asked Leonard to wait nearby for him to use the carriage again.
When Klein knocked on Leonard's door, Leonard was puzzled, but then something suddenly occurred to him, and he asked urgently:
"What happened? Is there a need for reinforcements?"
Klein looked at the radiant Leonard with envy, but shook his head and solemnly gestured for Leonard to come in.
Leonard frowned slightly, completely baffled as to what Klein was up to, but he still let him in and scouted the area outside to see if anyone was following Klein.
As soon as the two sat down, Klein went straight to the point:
"You possess secrets involving higher sequences, don't you?"
"Cough cough cough..."
This one sentence caused Leonard, who had just picked up his teacup to drink, to choke, spilling tea all over his pants, leaving him in a flurry of activity.
However, Leonard, being a seasoned night watchman, quickly regained his composure, squinting at Klein, neither admitting nor denying, but putting plenty of pressure on Klein.
Feeling the pressure, Klein didn't give in. Instead, he looked Leonard straight in the eye with difficulty. Finally, Leonard released the pressure on Klein and asked uncertainly:
Why do you have this idea?
Klein then explained the reasons that Evan had given him.
"My classmate Evan collected an extraordinary item that is very difficult for others to detect. He was quite surprised to find that you were able to sense it, so he told me. I was just bluffing you."
Leonard's face flushed red (from the old man's mockery). He never expected to be exposed like this, nor did he expect to be tricked out of his true nature by Klein, a newcomer to the mystical arts.
Before Leonard could even offer a defense, Klein continued:
"I've always had a bad feeling about what's happening around me. These past few days, the captain has told me that the extraordinary events that have occurred recently are several times more frequent than usual, which makes me even more alert. I always feel like someone is plotting something."
Yesterday, after I was promoted to a diviner, I noticed something unusual about old Neil, which also made me uneasy.
Taking both sides into consideration, I feel that this matter cannot be delayed any longer, so I hope to get your endorsement and report this matter to the captain together with me.
I don't want to pry into your secrets. As long as it doesn't harm others, I can even keep your secret. Now, I'm just asking you to do me this once, for Old Neil's sake.
At first, Leonard scoffed at the idea that someone was plotting something in the shadows, but his expression grew increasingly strange as he listened. After Klein finished speaking, he muttered to himself:
"You might be right, a lot has indeed happened during this period."
Leonard immediately came to his senses and said with a serious expression:
"Tell me in detail about the strange things you noticed about Old Neil, especially what you saw after you activated your spiritual awareness."
Klein saw no need to hide anything and explained the situation in great detail, but the more he spoke, the darker Leonard's face became.
As a newcomer, Klein hadn't even taken many classes in the occult, so naturally he didn't know what pupils without eyelashes represented. Leonard, on the other hand, who had an elderly grandfather, knew all too well what it meant.
That was the symbol and emblem of the evil god, the hidden sage, through the path of the "Hidden One," and Old Neil was the "Hidden One."
So Leonard didn't hesitate any longer, started putting on his coat, and headed for the door, with Klein quickly following.
Thanks to Klein's foresight, he and Leonard rode in a carriage that was hard to find at night, speeding towards Blackthorn Security Company, where Captain Dunn was on night duty that night.
When Dunn heard Leonard's story, he did not hesitate at all. He opened the Charis Gate and took out the powerful seal artifact 3-0611, Quiet Hair.
This time they weren't dealing with wild extraordinary beings or vicious enemies, so 'Quiet Hair' was the most effective sealing artifact.
