Chapter 62 "The Provocateur" Extraordinary Traits
Chapter 62 "The Provocateur" Extraordinary Traits
"May I ask your name, sister? And what are we going to do next?" Evan was always very sweet-talking when he was around beautiful women, and this time was no exception.
Miss Trish, with her stunning figure, blonde hair, and blue eyes, was delighted to hear such a handsome man call her "sister," and smiled as she replied:
"I need to take you to the onboarding office first, and go through all sorts of procedures. Since you are a secret intelligence agent, we need to go to the underground confidential archives to fill out your file, then get your credentials, and even open a bank account for you, pay your salary, and so on. There are a lot of things to do."
As she spoke, Trish led Evan to an inconspicuous little door in an office cubicle, and handed Evan a golden mask. After Evan put it on, she opened the little door and led Evan inside.
Once inside, Evan discovered that someone was guarding the place. Only after Trish produced a warrant was she able to lead Evan down the stairs.
The staircase spiraled downwards, leading straight to the ground. The surrounding walls were all concrete, without any gaps, and there wasn't a single opening except for the small door that Trish had led him in through.
"These channels are specially set up for intelligence agents with a high level of secrecy. Only intelligence agents who report directly to the director and deputy director can enter them. In the future, you will also have to use this channel to report your work. You can no longer enter directly from the reception hall."
As Miss Trish carefully descended the stairs, she explained to Evan that the spiral staircase was indeed not very friendly to her wearing high heels.
Evan quickly helped her up and asked at the same time:
"I've heard there are many sealed artifacts underground, right? Are they connected to the outside world? Isn't that unsafe?"
Miss Trish gave Evan a grateful look, then explained:
"MI9's underground area is actually very large, with three levels. The bottom level is sealed with those dangerous sealed objects, and no one can approach it without an order from a deputy director or above."
The second underground level is where various classified files are stored and prisoners are held. It is also where you secret agents come and go. It is connected to some rooms on the surrounding streets, so you can come and go without being discovered.
The first basement level houses the various extraordinary squads stationed here, including their quarters, rest areas, and card rooms.
Generally, the three underground floors are not interconnected, and the passageway we are walking through now leads directly to the offices of the department heads and deputy department heads on the three floors above ground.
The office staff you see up there are all civilian employees; the real extraordinary ones are those stationed underground. For a real intelligence agency, the location of MI9 is not a secret.
Therefore, whether it's an intelligence agent entering or a team of extraordinary individuals going out on a mission, they cannot simply leave through the main gate; they must all leave secretly through the underground passages.
Evan understood. It was like an iceberg; what was above the water was only the tip, while the real behemoth was hidden beneath.
As she spoke, Miss Trish led Evan to their destination, where there was also a door and a guard.
Only after showing the warrant again were they allowed to leave and enter the second underground level.
Watching the door behind her close, Miss Trish whispered to Evan:
"These guards at the passageway are all veterans of MI9. Don't be rude when you come in and out in the future."
Evan nodded and said "yes". In fact, even if she didn't say it, Evan wouldn't provoke people casually. Having read so many essays in her previous life, Evan knew very well that these people might look insignificant, but they might be the big boss's subordinates back then. How could she easily offend them?
After giving Evan a few instructions, Miss Trish led him along the dimly lit passageway lit by the gaslights to a relatively spacious hall. Dozens of people were coming and going, but without exception, they all wore golden masks, did not communicate with each other, and were all doing their own things.
Looking around, Evan saw rows of offices around the hall, including the "Logistics Department," "Archives Department," "Materials Department," "Firearms Management Department," "Communications Department," "Finance Department," "Personnel Department," "Medical Department," and so on. Evan even saw the word "Union." In short, it was a diverse and well-organized group with everything imaginable.
This led Evan to basically confirm that the buildings above were used by high-ranking MI9 personnel, with some civilian staff serving as a facade, while the actual MI9 headquarters remained underground.
Without hesitation, Miss Trish took Evan directly into the archives department, where the head of the archives department filled out the relevant forms for him, and had Evan bleed a drop of blood onto the corresponding file and employment contract.
The induction contract is basically the same as the one Klein signed as a Night Watchman, only slightly more rigorous.
After signing the contract, Evan felt a binding force enveloping him.
Having a connection to the mysterious city, Evan could clearly feel the net binding his body, making him understand that if he broke the contract, he would suffer the most severe punishment.
Miss Trish then took Evan to the personnel department to register, and then to the general affairs department to collect his military uniform and corresponding documents. The uniform and rank insignia could only be kept at home and could not be worn. The documents he received were from the police station, which meant that Evan would also have the identity of a police inspector.
Of course, all the names used were pseudonyms, including the information filled out in the archives. Miss Trish would take Evan's real name file upstairs, where Deputy Director Jonas would fill it out and seal it.
After obtaining the credentials, Evan was taken to the "Firearms Management Section" to receive a revolver and twenty rounds of Demon Hunter ammunition.
After all the procedures were completed, Miss Trish did not let Evan leave. Instead, she found an empty room and explained some of the rules of MI9 to Evan.
For example, he would drop an envelope into a certain place every day, and the contents of the letter were a complex symbol.
Because of their special status as foreign intelligence agents, they don't need to come to work every day, so they use this method to let their "home" know they are safe. The post office has people specifically assigned to check these letters.
For example, the scope of MI9's recruitment of peripheral personnel: those who are truly promising and planned to be recruited in the future should ideally have a noble status, or even better, be nobles themselves.
If you want to recruit extraordinary individuals who pose a threat, such as cultists, then whoever recruits them will ultimately be held responsible.
Evan can currently recruit 3 to 5 peripheral personnel. MI9 can provide them with a weekly stipend of one pound and also allow them to accumulate merits to exchange for potion recipes and potion materials, and even some occult knowledge.
For example, he was required to subscribe to the Backlund Morning Post, the most common newspaper in Backlund, every day. If Deputy Director Jonas had a task to assign, he would publish it in the newspaper using code words. If there was an urgent task to assign, he would leave some marks for him in a corner of Central Park in the West End. Once Evan saw them, he would immediately go to MI9.
Miss Trish explained everything that needed to be told to Evan, down to the smallest detail, and even had Evan repeat it to her in case he forgot.
Only after Evan accurately repeated it did she smile and say:
"A few days ago, Congressman Robert came to my door wanting his brother to come to MI9. I thought I would have an assistant, but I didn't expect you to choose to become a secret intelligence agent."
"I still want to thank you for your help today, sister. I'll treat you to a meal sometime."
Miss Trish ran around all morning and worked very hard, so Evan was very grateful and said this sincerely.
Miss Trish giggled and said, "Okay, you've got a conscience after all. I'll wait and see what kind of feast you'll treat me to."
As she spoke, she pulled a box out of nowhere and pushed it towards Evan, saying:
"Here you go, this is what Director Jonas told me before, consider it a perk for joining MI9."
Without refusing, Evan opened the small box in front of Miss Trish and found a dark black stone inside, with liquid flowing on its surface and emitting a strong 'stench'.
Without Miss Trish's explanation, Evan knew through spiritual attraction that this was an extraordinary 'Provocateur' trait.
