Chapter 52 Two Emails
Chapter 52 Two Emails
At the same time, fifty kilometers away, at the Southwest Military Region's temporary camp.
A similar scene is unfolding.
The remaining 34 members of the Hunter Blade Special Forces team—in fact, the "fallen" members had been "resurrected" after last night's exercise, but each of them wore the same confusion and frustration on their faces.
Chen Jianfeng stood at the front of the line, and Qin Feng stood next to him.
"Commander, what exactly happened?" a team member couldn't help but ask. "Which unit were those people from yesterday? We've never seen their tactics before. Their speed, coordination, equipment... they're on a completely different level."
"Yeah, we were 'killed' before we even saw a shadow of anyone."
"They must have sent at least a reinforced platoon, right?"
The team members chattered amongst themselves. Chen Jianfeng listened, his heart aching even more. There was one person on the Northwest side, and one person on his side, yet his own soldiers still thought the enemy had sent an entire army.
The difference is... too big.
He raised his hand to signal for quiet, then glanced at Qin Feng. Qin Feng nodded, indicating that he was ready.
"Comrades," Chen Jianfeng began, "first, I want to tell you a fact. Yesterday, it wasn't just one unit that caused damage to the Southwest Military Region."
The team members were taken aback.
"It was just one person." Chen Jianfeng's voice was a little hoarse when he said this. "From beginning to end, it was just one person."
Dead silence.
A few seconds later, it exploded.
"one person?!"
"Commander, this is impossible! Thirty-four of us, killed by one person..."
"Does he have the ability to create clones of himself?"
Qin Feng stepped forward, his voice low: "It's true. I saw it with my own eyes. In the end, in the valley, he took down me and two of my teammates all by himself. The whole process... took less than a minute."
Now no one spoke. Qin Feng was the captain of Hunter's Blade, their role model. If even Qin Feng said that…
Chen Jianfeng continued, "On the Northwest Military Region side, it was also just one person. The entire exercise was carried out by just two people, who utterly crushed both of our military regions."
Only heavy breathing could be heard inside the tent.
Suddenly, a veteran soldier asked, "Commander, are they... the same unit that Lin's team is currently in?"
That was a very careful question. It was common knowledge that Lin Zhe had been transferred from Hunter Blade, but no one knew where he had been transferred to. All anyone knew was that Captain Lin had gone to a "more important place."
Chen Jianfeng glanced at the team member but didn't answer directly: "Specific information about them is top secret. I can only tell you that they represent the highest level of individual combat capability in the Dragon Kingdom. Each and every one of them is a strategic force cultivated by the country at great expense."
He paused for a moment, then continued, "As for Lin Zhe... he is indeed in that unit now."
"Buzz—"
The team members whispered among themselves. Although they had suspected it before, the confirmation still shocked them.
Qin Feng clenched his fists. He remembered what that person had said last day—"Tell Lin Zhe that his troops are alright, but still far from good enough."
It turned out to be the case.
"Commander." Qin Feng raised his head, his eyes no longer filled with confusion, but only with determination. "Can we... become stronger? Strong enough that one day we can fight alongside them?"
Looking at the young officer he had the highest hopes for, Chen Jianfeng thought to himself, "Whether you can become as strong as them, I don't know. But I do know that if you get discouraged because of this failure, you'll never have a chance."
He addressed the entire team: "This exercise was something Commander Jiang Tao and I volunteered for. The purpose was to let you—and us commanders—see what real modern warfare is like. As you can see, the cost was high, but it was worth it."
"From today onwards, the Hunter Blade training syllabus will be revised, the combat philosophy will be updated, and the equipment will be upgraded," Chen Jianfeng said resolutely. "We must turn yesterday's failures into tomorrow's strength!"
"Yes!" the team members answered in unison, their voices regaining their strength.
Around noon, the participating troops from the two military regions began to withdraw one after another.
At a fork in the main road, the convoys from the northwest and southwest met. Jiang Tao and Chen Jianfeng got out of their car and walked to the side of the road.
The two commanders looked at each other and saw similar weariness and helplessness on each other's faces.
"Old Chen, how's the reaction from your soldiers?" Jiang Tao offered him a cigarette.
Chen Jianfeng took the light, lit it, and took a deep drag: "This is outrageous. Even now, some people still don't believe it was done by one person."
"Same here." Jiang Tao smiled wryly. "When I told them the truth, one of the young soldiers burst into tears, saying that he felt he had wasted all those years in the army."
The two remained silent for a while, watching the long line of cars stretching along the highway.
"But then again," Chen Jianfeng exhaled a puff of smoke, "this lesson, though harsh, was effective. When I came over just now, I saw those Hunter Blade kids, and their eyes were different. Before, it was pride, now it's... hunger. That kind of hunger to become stronger."
Jiang Tao nodded: "Canglang too. Gao Cheng asked me if I could contact that person from yesterday for advice. I returned the note to him and told him to handle it himself."
"Qin Feng asked a similar question." Chen Jianfeng stubbed out his cigarette. "Old Jiang, tell me... is what we're doing right? Throwing these young soldiers into the abyss and then letting them climb out on their own?"
"Even if it's wrong, it has to be right." Jiang Tao looked at the undulating mountains in the distance. "Peace has lasted too long, and the troops are prone to complacency. Someone needs to keep reminding them from time to time—war is never child's play."
He paused for a moment, then added, "Moreover, if yesterday's exercise really woke them up, the combat effectiveness of these two military regions will be elevated to a higher level in the future. This deal is definitely worthwhile."
The two chatted for a few more minutes before getting into their respective cars.
The convoy slowly started moving, heading in different directions. But the officers and soldiers from both military regions shared the same secret and the same goal.
In the Hunter Blade convoy, Qin Feng sat in the passenger seat, watching the mountain scenery rushing past the window. He held his phone in his hand, the screen displaying an encrypted email address.
He hesitated, wondering whether or not to send that email.
Finally, he opened the editing page and started typing:
"Team Leader Lin, this is Qin Feng. During yesterday's exercise, your teammates showed me that we're still quite weak. I'd like to ask you a few questions..."
Click send.
Almost simultaneously, Gao Cheng also sent a similar email from a convoy in the Northwest Military Region.
Two captains, two special operations teams, at this moment, embarked on the same path—a path of chasing the strong and surpassing themselves.
Meanwhile, at the "Hidden Dragon" base in Beijing, Lin Zhe had just finished his mission report and returned to his dormitory.
My computer notified me of a new email.
He opened it and saw the letters from Qin Feng and Gao Cheng.
Lin Zhe looked at the email for a while, then closed it without replying immediately.
He knew that the aftermath of this exercise was only just beginning.
