Chapter 4 Finding Wild Eggs
Chapter 4 Finding Wild Eggs
Farmers eat two meals a day. They go out to work in the fields for an hour in the morning, and the first meal they eat when they get home is breakfast. They eat their second meal, dinner, before dark.
Wen Yuxia didn't plan to eat at home, so she only made enough for Wen Dashan: brown rice and lettuce porridge with scallions and cilantro, and two dark brown flatbreads.
Just as she brought the porridge and flatbread out of the kitchen, Wen Dashan came out of his room. Wen Yuxia whispered, "Grandpa, leave your breakfast inside. I'll take Hong'er to gather firewood. We'll eat breakfast at the foot of the mountain."
"Don't go up the mountain, come back soon," Wen Dashan said as he walked towards the well.
"I understand, I'll keep a close eye on Hong'er and make sure he doesn't run around," Wen Yuxia quickly assured him, worried that Wen Dashan might be concerned.
Wen Dashan had complete faith in Wen Yunhong. During this time, Wen Yunhong had been the one gathering firewood and digging for wild vegetables; if he wasn't told to go up the mountain, he wouldn't.
Wen Dashan's biggest worry was Wen Yuxia. She had fainted in the deep mountains last time, and she often pretended to comply but then went up the mountain to dig for wild vegetables, pick wild fruits, and steal bird eggs. She was even more mischievous than a boy.
"You're not allowed to go up the mountain, understand?" Wen Dashan raised his hand and gestured, meaning that he would get a beating if he went up the mountain and came back.
"Okay, okay, hurry up and go, Grandpa. It's almost dawn, come back early when the sun comes up," Wen Yuxia half-pushed, half-pulled Wen Dashan out of the courtyard.
Looking back, she saw that the people from the first, second, and third wives' families were all up. Too lazy to call for help, Wen Yuxia darted into the room.
"Someone's here, wait a minute."
"Big brother, hurry up, I can't hold it in any longer!"
"Big cousin, excuse me, I need to get some water,"
"Second sister-in-law, why are you grabbing my noodles? That bowl of noodles on the stove is ours!"
"I was using this stove last night, and I thought I had put it here. Hehe, third sister-in-law, sorry about that."
……
Hearing the noise in the yard, Wen Yuxia said she had to earn money to repair the house and get away from the arguments.
"Hong'er, wake up, wake up! You started learning martial arts today, didn't you?" Wen Yuxia shook her younger brother awake.
After Wen Yunhong finished washing up, the siblings carried baskets on their backs, locked the door, and walked towards the foot of the mountain. They even took a detour to the fields to hand the key to Wen Dashan.
"Hong'er, squat in a horse stance here," Wen Yuxia demonstrated, instructing Wen Yunhong to squat there without moving, and then sit on the grass to read the "Lightness Skill Manual".
Wen Yunhong squatted there with his fists clenched, and asked curiously, "Sister, aren't you squatting?"
“My master passed on all his inner strength to me. Now I’m learning lightness skills. You stay here and squat down. We’ll go collect firewood in half an hour. You can rest for a while if you’re feeling tired,” Wen Yuxia said as she watched.
Half an hour passed in the blink of an eye, but for Wen Yunhong it felt like a long ordeal. In just half an hour, he had rested three times!
However, Wen Yuxia did not scold him for this. She just looked at her younger brother calmly and told him firmly, "We will start practicing boxing when you can squat for a full hour at a time."
After saying this, Wen Yuxia gently walked to Wen Yunhong's side, squatted down, and gently massaged his two legs, which were already aching terribly.
Every gesture was filled with care and love, making Wen Yunhong feel her sister's boundless warmth. After the massage, Wen Yuxia stood up, her gaze sweeping around before finally choosing a quiet, secluded mountain forest.
"Hong'er, few people go there. Let's go there to dig for wild vegetables."
"Sister, Grandpa said we're not allowed to go up the mountain, have you forgotten?"
"Tch, look closely, aren't we on a mountain right now?"
Wen Yunhong silently shut his mouth. He had been so excited about learning martial arts that he hadn't even noticed that the place where he was practicing his horse stance was halfway up the mountain.
Wen Yuxia wore a victorious smile and felt very pleased with herself. The honest and obedient Wen Yunhong had now been led astray by her, and she would have another person to cover for her when going up the mountain in the future.
She took out four rice balls that emitted a faint fragrance from her basket (actually, from her spatial storage), and handed two of them to Wen Yunhong.
She said softly, "Don't be curious about where the rice ball came from. Just eat it. Also, don't tell anyone else about this, including Grandpa!"
Wen Yunhong, who was initially full of doubts and about to ask where those snow-white rice balls came from, immediately shut his mouth after hearing his sister's words, obediently nodding to indicate that he understood.
For him, having something to fill his stomach was enough. Since his sister told him not to ask, he simply wouldn't.
After a hearty meal, the siblings rested briefly before starting their work: gathering firewood and digging for wild vegetables.
The two worked together seamlessly, with Wen Yunhong responsible for finding suitable branches and firewood, while Wen Yuxia focused on digging for wild vegetables.
Perhaps because few people come here, the shepherd's purse grows very lushly. Wen Yuxia picked the tender shepherd's purse and filled half a basket. Then, she took out two lettuce stalks from her spatial storage and said loudly, "Hong'er, look, I dug up two lettuce stalks!"
Looking at the two lettuce stalks in Wen Yuxia's hand, Wen Yunhong asked in confusion, "Lettuce? Why are there lettuce stalks here?"
Isn't lettuce a vegetable? It's strange that vegetables grow on mountains instead of in vegetable gardens. Wen Yunhong couldn't understand, shaking her little head and saying, "My sister is luckier than me."
He had been digging for wild vegetables for a month but hadn't found a single lettuce. Wen Yuxia, on the other hand, would dig up two at a time. He decided to just focus on gathering firewood and leave the lettuce digging to his sister.
Wen Yuxia breathed a sigh of relief. Hehe, the lettuce got away with it; now it's time to find some wild eggs.
Originally, Wen Yuxia planned to take out a few eggs from her spatial storage and pretend they were wild eggs she had found. However, after rummaging through the wild vegetables and weeds, she actually found a nest of green-shelled wild eggs.
"Hong'er, come here quickly, there's a nest of eggs here," Wen Yuxia's voice this time betrayed her excitement.
After all, the wild eggs were real; she found them in the grass. The eggs in her spatial storage were temporarily safe.
The mooncakes we ate yesterday couldn't be replenished this morning. Wen Yuxia suspected that the things in the space were becoming increasingly scarce and couldn't be regenerated, so she had to be as frugal as possible.
"Where are the wild eggs?" Upon hearing about wild eggs, Wen Yunhong's mouth watered.
Wen Yuxia felt sorry for the little guy when she saw him like this. All the money in the house was in his grandmother's hands, and the little guy hadn't eaten an egg for three years. Although the original owner would bring back some bird eggs every now and then, it couldn't satisfy his craving.
"1, 2, 3... 10, 10, how many wild eggs does Sister have in total?" Wen Yunhong could only count to ten; she got a little confused after that.
“15,” Wen Yuxia said as she arranged the wild eggs in rows of five, making three rows in total. With readily available teaching aids, she could also teach the little one to count.
Wen Yunhong was quite clever and quickly applied what he had learned to other situations. He counted from 15 to 30. Wen Yuxia put the eggs into the basket, then picked a few handfuls of shepherd's purse and put them on top of the eggs. Finally, she haphazardly plucked two large handfuls of grass to cover them.
He then put a few more pieces of firewood in Wen Yunhong's basket, bundled the rest together, and dragged them down the mountain with a vine.
