Chapter 34 Arrival at the Tribe
Chapter 34 Arrival at the Tribe
"Sister Xinyao, look! That's the Ink Serpent Tribe!" Xiaohua pointed excitedly out the window.
Following the direction of her finger, Chu Xinyao was slightly taken aback. What she saw was a scene completely different from the tribes she had seen before. The architectural style of the Ink Serpent Tribe reminded her of modern Miao villages, but it also had its own unique charm.
The houses of the Ink Serpent Tribe are mostly made of wood, with thick thatched roofs that sway gently in the mountain breeze. These houses are built against the mountainside, layer upon layer, arranged in a staggered and orderly fashion.
The exterior walls of the house are painted with various colorful patterns, mostly snakes, which are winding and coiled, and are very lifelike.
These houses are similar to the stilted houses in Miao villages, both being two or three-story wooden structures. The ground floor is suspended in the air and used for storing items or raising livestock, while the upper floor is for living.
The orcs here are mostly male, all dressed in hemp clothing of various colors. As the caravan approached, the orcs immediately became excited, waving their arms and cheering enthusiastically.
The convoy slowly came to a stop at a fork in the road. Not far ahead was a similar sacrificial plaza to the one they had seen before, with ancient totem poles standing in the center. Beside it, a towering tree that Chu Xinyao did not recognize stretched out its dense branches and leaves, casting a cool shade over this sacred land.
The car door was gently pushed open, and Chu Xinyao turned her head to see Mo Yi, who, contrary to his previous evasive attitude, was now beaming with an unusual enthusiasm. His eyes shone with an indescribable light, as if something extraordinary was about to happen.
"Xinyao, we've arrived." Mo's voice trembled slightly, a rare sight for his usually composed demeanor. He reached out and gently lifted Chu Xinyao out of the car.
"Mo, what's wrong with you...?"
Chu Xinyao was startled by Mo's actions. She felt his arm trembling, not from nervousness, but as if he were suppressing some intense emotion. Mo's gaze was fixed on Chu Xinyao's face, and the gentle smile that Chu Xinyao loved bloomed on his handsome features.
He didn't speak, but simply held Chu Xinyao tightly, his steps firm and powerful as he walked towards the sacrificial plaza. Chu Xinyao could feel the violent rise and fall of his chest; each heartbeat seemed to convey a powerful emotion she couldn't decipher.
Mo's unusual behavior puzzled Chu Xinyao, as if something was slipping out of her control.
"Mo?" This action made her somewhat uneasy.
"Xinyao, don't be afraid, we're home." Mo comforted her with a smile, but it had no effect. Instead, it made Chu Xinyao in his arms even more uneasy.
Mo's smile was gentle, but it seemed deliberate, like he was wearing a mask. The smile didn't seem to truly reach the depths of his eyes.
Chu Xinyao closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and tried to calm herself, telling herself it must be an illusion. When she opened her eyes again, her gaze unexpectedly met Mo's deep and mysterious dark red eyes. There seemed to be flames dancing in those eyes, but Chu Xinyao couldn't tell whether they contained anticipation, excitement, or some other more complex emotion.
As they approached the plaza, the cheers from the surrounding orcs grew even louder. Chu Xinyao looked up and saw that the ink snake carved on the totem pole seemed to have come to life; a flash of red light appeared in its black eyes, as if it were foreshadowing something.
Just then, Mo finally stopped. He gently put Chu Xinyao down, took a deep breath, and gestured for the people around him to be quiet. The noise in the square gradually subsided, and all eyes were on them.
"Listen up, everyone, I have an important announcement to make." Mo's voice was incredibly penetrating. "The lady standing beside me is your mistress, and also my one and only partner in this life. Tonight, we will hold a marriage ceremony here to celebrate our union..."
Mo's words were simple yet powerful, each syllable clearly reaching the ears of every beastman present. But Chu Xinyao couldn't hear what he said afterward; she stared at Mo in shock, never imagining she would be introduced to everyone in this way. Most importantly, Mo hadn't asked for her opinion before telling everyone they would be getting married that night.
A sense of anxiety welled up inside her, and she instinctively wanted to refuse, but given the occasion and the identity of the Mo clan chief, it was not a good time.
Inside the largest stilted house on the mountaintop, Chu Xinyao looked at the busy woman in front of her. It wasn't the Xiao Hua she knew, but a female member of the Ink Serpent Clan.
"What did you say your name was?" Chu Xinyao asked uncertainly.
"Madam, my name is Xiaobai." Xiaobai repeated her name. As she answered, she decorated the room beautifully, occasionally taking out various flowers from her basket and carefully adorning the room.
"Do you have a younger sister named Xiaoqing?" Chu Xinyao continued to ask.
"Mistress, how did you know? But Xiaoqing is my younger brother, not my younger sister." Xiaobai was pleasantly surprised that the mistress knew about her brother.
"Uh..." Chu Xinyao was a little stunned, not expecting there really was such a thing. She smiled slightly, trying to ease the awkwardness, "I've only heard about it. By the way, where's Xiaohua?"
"Xiaohua is not yet of marriageable age, so the clan sent me to serve the mistress, especially for tonight's marriage ceremony. There are some things I need to tell you, mistress," Xiaobai said earnestly.
Hearing the word "marriage" gave Chu Xinyao a headache. She was just having fun and she did like Mo, but she didn't want to become a married person so soon. Besides, what if she got pregnant with her body type?
"By the way, Xiaobai, could you call your clan leader over? I have something to say to him."
After Mo made the announcement in the square, he had someone send her up the mountain. She wanted to discuss with him the plan to postpone the marriage ceremony.
Xiao Bai left to find Mo, and Chu Xinyao began to wander aimlessly around the room, taking in the most luxurious stilted house on the mountaintop.
This stilted house has three floors and is surrounded by a fence resembling bamboo woven in the outside. The first floor is no different from other stilted houses; the main house is built on solid ground, while the side rooms, except for one side which is connected to the main house and rests on solid ground, are suspended in the air on the other three sides and supported by pillars. The first floor is the main activity area, with a sturdy wooden table in the center of the main house and several intricately carved wooden chairs around it.
Going up the stairs, the second floor is a rest area with several comfortable rattan hammocks. Light gauze curtains hang around the hammocks, similar to her clothes but more translucent. The walls are decorated with bamboo and wooden baskets and vases, filled with fresh wildflowers that Xiaobai has just arranged.
The room was filled with a fresh floral fragrance, which helped Chu Xinyao relax her tense nerves a little.
The third floor was presumably their bridal chamber, and it was decorated with exceptional exquisiteness. The floor was covered with soft animal hides, which felt soft and fluffy underfoot. I don't know what kind of animal the hides were, but they even had a slightly cool feel to them. A large bed occupied the center of the room, and the sturdy wooden bed was even carved with intricate snake patterns. The bed was covered with a duvet cover, which was even embroidered with flowers.
Chu Xinyao's gaze fell on the other side of the room, where there was a dressing table with various wooden combs and some exquisitely carved wooden hairpins that Xiaobai had just brought.
However, what attracted her attention the most was the little booklet that Xiaobai had quietly placed on the dressing table. The booklet was probably made of some kind of silk. Chu Xinyao gently unfolded it, but after just one glance, she immediately blushed and closed it.
This is actually a... palace illustration book!
Then she had to study hard. She closed the door on the third floor, sat down in front of the dressing table, her face flushed, and unfolded the silk booklet again.
As Chu Xinyao unfolded the booklet, she was greatly shocked. These beastmen were truly audacious. The illustrations were extremely detailed, with every detail meticulously drawn and lifelike.
Her cheeks grew hotter and hotter, and her heart pounded faster and faster. When she saw the end, her eyes widened—this…this was a third person!
Wow, that's so exciting!
