Chapter 306 - 308: The Paranormal Bus
During this time, a police officer who wasn’t aware of the situation approached the chubby auntie, the little girl, and the skinny old man for routine questioning.
"What’s your name? What happened here?"
As he spoke, the officer carefully examined the bloodstains on the ground. ’It’s human blood!’
But none of the people before him had any wounds. ’Could it be true, just like the person who called it in said? Was there a ghost?’
"I-I’m Li Xue, from the Heihe people. The killer—"
Li Xue swallowed hard, still visibly shaken. "There’s a ghost here!"
The officer: ’???’
He was speechless and looked at Li Xue with a helpless expression, not believing a word she said.
’Ghosts aren’t real.’
"Oh, right! It was a ghost my landlord made on purpose!"
The officer: ’I’m at a loss for words. Can ghosts be man-made?’
The one in charge immediately ordered, "Take them back to the station!"
Once at the station, they were separated. Su Nian was taken to a conference room by herself.
The person who met with Su Nian was an old man with graying hair and a very amiable attitude. "You must be the famous Heavenly Venerable Bailian!"
Hearing that name brought up again with such reverence only made Su Nian feel awkward.
"Just get to the point. What is it?"
The uniformed old man’s expression turned a little strange. "We have a matter that requires your assistance."
Su Nian nodded nonchalantly. ’I figured as much.’
The uniformed old man said, "Over the past six months, supernatural incidents have been popping up more and more frequently all over the world. Some people have chosen to profit from them, but you’re different. You’ve selflessly helped a great many people."
Su Nian watched him with a deadpan expression. ’Laying on the flattery this thick must mean he has a difficult request.’
Sure enough, he continued, "I was wondering if you would be willing to join us and help the people who have been victimized."
Su Nian suddenly realized what he was getting at. ’Is he trying to get my help for free?’
Su Nian lifted her chin. "So, does it pay?"
The uniformed old man chuckled and poured Su Nian a cup of tea. "Well, it’s all in service of the people..."
Su Nian’s lips twitched.
Seeing that Su Nian was unmoved, the old man frowned and then said tentatively,
"How about we apply for a five-hundred subsidy for you per case?"
Su Nian: "..."
Seeing Su Nian still sitting there with a cold expression, the old man started to get genuinely anxious.
"Then... one thousand per case?"
Su Nian: "..."
’I want to earn good karma, but this is way too little!’
"Fifteen hundred?"
"Two thousand?"
"Two thousand is my absolute bottom line! Going once for two thousand, going twice, sold for two thousand?!"
"Fine."
Seeing the old man’s face flushed red, looking as if he was in agony, Su Nian finally nodded at the last second, then raised another condition.
"I’ll only take three cases a month."
The old man looked troubled, but seeing Su Nian’s expression, he gritted his teeth and agreed.
Su Nian picked up her bag, ready to leave, but the old man quickly handed her a file.
"Is this the first case for this month?"
’Starting the same day I’m hired?’
Su Nian found it even more incomprehensible but didn’t say anything. She just took the file and looked at it.
’The Phantom Bus!’
The old man’s expression was grave. "This bus is very strange. Two people have already disappeared on it this month. On the surveillance footage, they clearly boarded the bus, but then they just vanished without a trace. We’ll have to trouble you to look into this."
Su Nian flipped through the file and nodded, seeing the words at the top: Bus Route 48...
As night fell, Su Nian stood at a bus stop, holding up a phone.
She was dressed in lavish clothes, had been dropped off by a luxury car, and possessed a stunningly beautiful face. She looked completely out of place at the bus stop.
Many buses came and went...
From a great distance, a wave of ghost energy spread out.
’The ghost bus is here...’
[Host, why are you so reckless? Going exploring without giving us any gift bags?]
[Yeah, how much money can exploring even make you?!]
[Forget it. I don’t care. It’s not like I’d win a gift bag anyway. I’d rather watch something new.]
The moment she stepped onto the bus, a chilling aura washed over her.
When Su Nian boarded, the bus was quite full. There was a girl with a red backpack, an honest-looking man, an old woman with her grandson, and a few young people sleeping against the windows.
This was a late-night bus, and the people on it were already exhausted.
But suddenly, something happened. The seemingly honest-looking man grabbed the girl next to him.
"You’re the one who stole my stuff! Come with me to the police!!"
The girl looked bewildered. "What are you talking about!"
The two struggled for a while. Su Nian watched from a distance without saying a word.
The girl, frightened, clung tightly to a handrail, while the man finally lost his patience.
He let go of the girl’s hand and scrambled toward the rear exit.
"There’s a ghost on this bus! Run!"
He shouted at the top of his lungs, trying to charge off the bus in a panic.
The other passengers on the bus, woken by his shouts, were alarmed and confused by his words.
But before anyone could react, the man rushed out the door.
Yet, the moment his foot touched the ground outside, his head suddenly fell to the floor.
[Oh my god, there really is a ghost on this bus.]
[I knew it! A place the host has to explore can’t be simple!]
[AHHHH!!]
The man’s body fell out of the bus, but his head rolled, THUMP-THUMP-THUMP, to the middle of the aisle.
The air froze for two seconds.
"AHHHH!!!"
Soon, a chorus of screams erupted one after another.
"I want to get off! I want to get off!!"
But the bus started moving...
"There’s a ghost! There’s a ghost!"
The commotion on the bus continued, growing more and more frantic.
But the bus pulled away smoothly. Someone rushed to the front to tell the driver to stop, only to find the driver’s seat completely empty. There was no one there!
This discovery made everyone even more terrified.
’If no one is driving, then why is the bus moving?’
’Is there really no one, or is the driver not human?’
[There’s no driver!!]
[No big deal, just let the host drive!]
[I think the head on the floor is scarier. I think I just saw it blink!]
[Don’t scare yourself!]
The bus passed another stop. Hope filled the eyes of many passengers, who swore to themselves that if they could just get off this bus...
’I’ll never ride a bus again for the rest of my life!’
But unfortunately, this time the bus drove straight past it.
Despair, fear, and horror began to permeate the bus cabin.
"Are we really going to die?"
"I think there’s a cliff up ahead. It’s not going to take us..."
"I don’t want to die! Stop! Stop the bus!!"
And amidst this despair, desperation drove one person to wickedness.
A man who had been sitting in his seat, terrified, abruptly stood up.
He was clutching a small knife in his hand as he walked straight toward Su Nian.
"We’re all going to die soon anyway. Why don’t you take off your clothes for me now!"
A smirk played on Su Nian’s lips as she glanced back at him.
On the handrail she was holding, clear finger indentations had appeared at some point.
"You disgusting little toad... Say that again."
