It was almost midnight when I got back to the urban village from the police station.
Night swallowed up all the building outlines. Gu Xinglan walked in front, while Li Hetai walked behind.
"Where did you bury the dog?"
The person who had been silent the whole way behind him suddenly spoke up.
Gu Xinglan turned around and could only see the child's hair being blown by the wind, and that slightly tired face.
"Let's rest first, we can talk about it tomorrow," he said helplessly.
"Right now."
Li Hetai slowly approached, his gaze sharp and unwavering as he looked directly at him. His voice was firm and resolute: "Take me there."
Big Black was buried in the grove.
As autumn approached, the wind blew dryly all day long. Li Hetai squatted on the small mound for a while, then stretched out his hand and placed it on the raised mound.
Seeing this, he immediately grabbed the child's hand as he was about to dig: "You want to dig in the dirt?"
The man didn't say anything, but his body language told him that he wanted to dig the dog out.
"I come."
Gu Xinglan rolled up her sleeves, but the other person slapped them away.
In no time, Li Hetai had already plucked black hairs from the mound, and in less than half a minute, the crevices under his fingernails were full of yellowish-brown.
A strange smell slowly began to emerge.
Gu Xinglan squatted by the withered tree, and even he couldn't help but wrinkle his nose.
It's not just a simple rotten smell.
The dog's carcass was half exposed, its fur disheveled, its eyes tightly closed, its eye sockets deeply sunken, and its protruding tongue extremely dry, dark red.
Seeing that Li Hetai didn't hesitate to lie down and sniff, his hair getting mixed with dog fur, Gu Xinglan quickly crawled over.
What do you smell?
Bitter apricot.
The dog's current condition clearly indicates poisoning. Even if it unfortunately ate rat poison or chocolate, the smell shouldn't be bitter almond.
"It should be cyanide."
Li Hetai stood up, raised his hand to wipe the dirt onto the tree bark, and glanced indifferently at the black dog's tongue.
Someone deliberately poisoned the dog.
To be able to obtain such a potent poison... Gu Xinglan suddenly looked at the child, several images quickly flashing through her mind.
This kind of thing can only be found in scrap yards, where some obsolete old chemical equipment can be sourced.
Could it be that those old folks staged this whole thing themselves? Did they see him on TV and deliberately try to extort money from him?
After all, there's no reason not to lock that stolen new car. Besides, how can you trust a stray dog to guard the car? It's illogical.
During the brainstorming session, the child was no longer in sight.
On the ground, the half-exposed black dog was slightly swollen, and its eyeballs were peeking out from between its eyelids.
He looked at the child walking away, then at the ground.
"Rest in peace, Big Black, go to your rest in peace." Muttering these words, Gu Xinglan half-squatted down and buried the soil back into the pit.

Rental housing.
The coffee table and sofa were crooked and askew. The potted plants on the balcony were smashed to pieces, with soil splattered everywhere. Leaves and ceramic shards were mixed together. Even the wall clock was crooked and tilted, its hands stopped at some chaotic moment.
Only on the small dining table, the few plates of cold food were neatly stuck together.
"I'll make you a hot one." Gu Xinglan looked at the cold dishes and had no appetite. She just wanted something with hot soup.
The noodles are cooked.
When it was brought out, no one from the bathroom had come out yet.
"Li Hetai? You're taking a dump in the toilet?"
He's been cooking noodles for so long; if he had a bowel movement, he should have finished by now.
With a creak, the door opened from the inside, and Li Hetai gave him a resentful look.
baffling.
Things got even stranger during the meal.
Then they saw Li Hetai constantly picking at something under the table.
"Is it an allergic reaction?"
He had almost finished eating what was in his bowl, while the child across from him hadn't even touched his chopsticks.
Who knows, it might have gotten some unwanted stuff on it while digging?
Gu Xinglan leaned on the table and looked down, only to see Li Hetai picking at his nails.
There seemed to be a yellowish-brown line clinging tightly to the flesh inside, and upon closer inspection, it was all mud.
He laughed.
"You..." Before he could finish speaking.
The next second, without giving him time to react, Li Hetai pulled out his chair and hurriedly left without even eating.
"I'm not mocking you," Gu Xinglan quickly called out to the departing figure.
The rented apartment was a mess and I didn't have time to tidy it up.
He grabbed a nail clipper and a wet towel and went to the bedroom.
The bedroom door was locked.
This is his bedroom. How can he sleep if he's locked out?
"Open the door, and I'll get you out."
Whether it was due to his skill or his daring, when he didn't receive a response, he used his key to open the bedroom door, and what he saw was Li Hetai picking at his fingernails with a short knife.
"..."
The two glared at each other, and Gu Xinglan said sternly, "Put the knife down first."
The knife was brought by those old men, and seeing it now makes me feel disgusted.
He walked over and patiently trimmed Li Hetai's ten fingernails to roughly the same length, then used a towel to repeatedly rub the yellow mud out of the crevices from top to bottom.
"If you use a knife, the more you try to clean it, the less clean it will be."
After finishing everything, looking at her ten clean and round fingers, Gu Xinglan felt a great sense of accomplishment and looked at the other person with pride.
Before I could even see any expression, the other person moved swiftly, jumping off the bed and leaving.
With a loud bang, the door was quickly slammed shut, leaving him alone in the bedroom.
"This child is very strange."
Gu Xinglan withdrew her gaze, lay down on the bed, and opened a book.
The book not only had bookmarks, but also pages folded at the corners, not the ones he had looked at last night.
It seems that Li and Tai have seen more.
I feel a little sorry for her.
After all, this is the ultimate collector's edition.
He frowned, his fingers gently tracing the crease, trying to smooth it out, but after only a few seconds of hesitation, his gaze was drawn to the words beside it.
Soon, completely absorbed in the story, Gu Xinglan's lips unconsciously curled up as she watched with great interest.
The night is getting darker.
When I came to my senses, a familiar white figure had already crawled into the bed next to me.
"You haven't taken a shower."
With a dark expression, Li Hetai pulled the blanket over himself, covering himself completely, leaving not a single bit for him.
He glanced at himself sheepishly; he was a bit dusty, but still clean.
"It's alright, I'll take the blankets out to air them tomorrow."
*
After taking a shower, I was steaming hot.
He was about to go wash the dishes.
The sink is empty.
The inside has been cleaned up, and looking at the trash can, there isn't even a trace of leftover food.
No, Li Hetai ate all those cold dishes?
What an amazing appetite!
The phrase "lifelike atmosphere" suddenly popped into my head, leaving me somewhat dazed.
When it was late at night, Gu Xinglan turned off the lights, took a beer, and went to the balcony.
The streets and alleys below were long since quieted down from the daytime hustle and bustle. The moonlight barely managed to dispel the dark, inky light, blurring even one's own shadow.
Apart from the bubbling of beer, I couldn't hear anything else, as if I were on a deserted island.
What does alcohol taste like?
The thing that had been churning in my head ever since I entered the room was finally out.
Administrator H: [I'll come over and post the results for you.]
Gu Xinglan took a sip of wine before saying, "Speak up earlier next time."
Administrator H: [Enough with the chit-chat, I'm here with good news again.]
Upon hearing the good news, Gu Xinglan paused in her drinking.
